The scene on Se7en includes a mid shot high angle on somebody’s hands, possibly a drawing or photocopy of hands, and then there is an extreme close up on the hands when he is scraping off his skin with the blade. There are close ups and medium long shots and we see lots of flashing images only briefly between each credit part. Then there is a high angle shot on the book with blanked out words and all of these images and actions begin to build up an idea in the viewers mind that this person could be up to no good. The camera then moves to an extreme close up on the finger reading through a hand written book and there is a close up on the words which he is crossing out. The words the perosn crosses out are heterosexual, intercourse, transsexual and also the person crosses out the eyes of a young boy and a babies face. Next there is a close up on the flicking pages which could signify that the person is planning and analysing something. Also the camera does a close up of some images including children and possibly people medically ill as one of the images shows some sort of pole coming from the back of a boy’s head. The camera does another close up on this person hand stitching this written book together. Also there is a final close up when this person cuts out the word God from an American dollar bill.
There are non-diagetic inhuman like sounds throughout the clip. The clip opens with deep base sounds and a quiet clicking noise can be heard. There are also squeaky noises, sounding almost like a tape being rewound. As the soundtrack progresses its pitch is continuously rising and screams can be heard. There is only one point where the soundtrack contains words and this is at the end of the clip with the dollar bill and seems a little inaudible but sounds like ‘ Your getting closer to God’ which could signify that this person wants to get closer to god by following what this person could believe to be Gods rules.
The editing is all very jerky to create effect and the editing is quick seemingly like a projector film. The editing in this opening clip has been very important in achieving its success. Everything has been put together in editing and there are examples of transitions, graphic matches and match on action. Also there is elliptical editing used. Lots of cutaways and jump cuts are used throughout and also cut zoom in and cut zoom out and multi-take to show the images filmed from different angles and distances.
Throughout the opening sequence images flash and there’s film footage of books, blades, photography, money, handwritten pages, undeveloped photography film and a dark room. Also when pausing the clip and moving through it slowly we can see messages flashing up on the screen. These images flash so fast the audience don’t even realise that their eyes have seen them. These messages are examples of subliminal messages and could be used for psychological manipulation within the film. These messages are used to inform the audience of details without them realising and can sometimes create the feeling of ‘Déjà Vu’ later on in the film when they are relevant. Messages which seem to continuously appear are ‘D39’ and ‘repeat.’
